Scalp Treatment for Sensitive Scalp: Not Just a Hair Mask

Say "hair treatment" and most people picture the same thing: a rich mask for dry ends, applied from mid-length down, left on for ten minutes, rinsed out. That's a reasonable idea for damaged hair fibre. It's the wrong idea for a sensitive scalp.

A shampoo alone often isn't enough once the scalp already reacts with itching, tightness or redness, produces excess sebum, or simply doesn't settle fully between washes. But not every product marketed as a "treatment" or a "Kur" is actually built with the scalp in mind.

Many are formulated for the hair fibre first, then marketed as if they cover the scalp too. Those are two different formulation problems, and a sensitive scalp needs the second one solved specifically, not assumed.

Signs your scalp needs more than shampoo

A few signs that cleansing alone isn’t covering what the scalp needs:

  • The scalp still feels tight or reactive, even with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo
  • Mild redness or irritation that doesn’t fully calm down between washes
  • Dry patches or flaking that a gentle shampoo hasn’t resolved on its own
  • The scalp produces excess sebum and becomes oily again quickly
  • Hair near the roots that feels rough or is harder to detangle than the lengths
  • A scalp that reacts more than it used to, to styling, weather, or colour treatments

Cleansing removes excess sebum, styling residue and impurities. It isn’t designed to provide all the conditioning and care the scalp may need afterwards.

If a mild shampoo alone isn’t enough, that’s usually a sign to look at what happens after cleansing, not to switch to a harsher one.

The scalp is skin, even at the treatment step

The scalp has its own barrier, its own microbiome, and its own moisture and sebum balance, the same as facial skin, but different from the hair fibre growing out of it. A treatment built primarily to smooth hair fibre often leans on silicones or heavier oils that coat the strand and make it feel instantly softer. On the scalp itself, that same coating effect can sit on the skin, feel occlusive, and get in the way of a barrier that’s already under strain.

A face needs a different product than the body it’s attached to. The scalp deserves the same distinction, including at the treatment step, not just at the shampoo step.

What to actually look for in a scalp treatment

A treatment built for a sensitive scalp, not just for hair fibre, should be able to say yes to most of this:

  • Silicone-free and paraben-free, the same standard already expected of the shampoo it’s paired with
  • Actives that are named specifically, with a stated role, not a vague "botanical complex"
  • A texture light enough to apply directly to the scalp, not only the lengths and ends
  • No added salt or heavy, occlusive oils that sit on the scalp rather than absorbing
  • A stable, minimal preservative system, not a long list of synthetic stabilisers doing the job a cleaner formulation could do instead
  • Ingredients selected with scalp moisture, comfort and sebum balance in mind

Why R&DETAIL® is formulated differently

The R&DETAIL® Hair & Scalp Treatment is built around that distinction from the start, not adapted from a hair-only formula afterwards. It is formulated without silicones and parabens, and its key ingredients are clearly identified: Zinc PCA, Provitamin B5 and Shea Butter.

Zinc PCA is the zinc salt of PCA, a natural moisturising factor the skin already produces, and it plays a specific role here in sebum and moisture balance, complementing the zinc gluconate used in the Skin Caring Shampoo.

This is particularly relevant for scalps that tend to become oily again quickly. Excess sebum is not simply a hair problem — it is part of the scalp environment itself and should therefore be considered when formulating scalp care.

The R&DETAIL formulation concept also draws on scientific findings from a medical study conducted at the Universitäts-Hautklinik Giessen. The scientific evidence from this research helped inform our approach to scalp-focused formulation and the selection of relevant ingredients. Provitamin B5 and Shea Butter provide additional care for the scalp while helping dry, coarse or chemically treated hair remain soft, manageable and easy to detangle without feeling heavily coated.

The preservative system stays deliberately minimal, thanks to a hot filling process, an airless/vacuum dispenser, and a skin-friendly low pH, so the formula doesn’t need parabens or MIT (methylisothiazolinone) to stay stable. All actives were selected together with a medical doctor, with one goal: a scalp treatment that actually treats the scalp, not just the hair growing out of it.

The R&DETAIL® routine

  • Cleanse: massage the Skin Caring Shampoo into the scalp and rinse thoroughly.
  • Treat: apply the Hair & Scalp Treatment to the scalp itself, as well as lengths and ends, not just the ends.
  • Stay consistent: a treatment step supports the scalp over time. It isn’t a one-off fix for a single bad week.

For the cleansing side of a sensitive-scalp routine, see our sensitive scalp shampoo guide.

The takeaway

A scalp treatment for a sensitive scalp isn’t a heavier version of the same conditioner used on the ends. It’s a separate formulation question, one that has to answer to the scalp’s own barrier, microbiome, and sebum balance, not only to how soft the hair feels afterwards.

That’s the standard R&DETAIL® holds itself to at every step of the routine, not only the shampoo: the scalp is skin, and it deserves a formula that treats it that way, from cleansing through to care.
