Getting rid of dandruff sounds simple in theory. Use the right shampoo, and the flakes disappear. Search for it, and most results promise a fast fix, one wash, visibly less flaking, problem solved.
That expectation sets almost everyone up to feel like nothing works. Dandruff isn't a layer sitting on top of the scalp that a strong enough shampoo can scrub away in one go. It's a recurring pattern, driven by the scalp's own barrier and oil balance, and patterns don't reset after a single shower.
The real question isn't which shampoo removes flakes fastest today. It's what actually changes the pattern over the coming weeks, so the flaking doesn't come straight back.
Why dandruff doesn't disappear after one wash
Even a shampoo that eventually works has real work to do first. Getting rid of dandruff means calming a scalp barrier that's often been disrupted for a while, by overly stripping surfactants, a harsh preservative system, or aggressive anti-dandruff actives used to fight the flaking directly. None of that reverses itself between one shower and the next.
The scalp also renews on its own timescale. Skin cells that are already visible as flakes take time to fully clear, and skin cells only just being triggered to over-produce need the barrier to stabilise first. Both happen over weeks, not days.
That's why a shampoo that seems to “not be working” after two washes usually isn't failing. It hasn't had time to work yet.
Signs it's actually dandruff
Persistent flaking has a few recognisable patterns:
- fine, white or yellowish flakes, visible on the scalp, in the hair, or on dark clothing
- an itchy or tight scalp, sometimes worse a day or two after washing
- roots that grease quickly, even shortly after a wash
- flaking that gets worse, not better, with a stronger or more frequent wash
- a pattern that returns within days, even after a wash that seemed to clear it
If flaking is severe, inflamed, or doesn't respond to weeks of a suitable routine, that's worth a doctor's opinion rather than a stronger shampoo. For the pattern described above, though, the scalp usually needs balance restored, not more force.
Your scalp is skin
Dandruff is treated like a haircare problem, but it behaves like a skin condition. The scalp has its own microbiome, its own barrier, and its own balance of oil and moisture, and disrupting any of them shows up as flaking, regardless of how thoroughly or how often the hair is washed.
This is also why getting rid of dandruff by washing more often usually backfires. More washing means more repeated exposure to whatever disrupted the barrier in the first place, and the flaking often gets worse before it gets better, not the other way round.
What actually helps
A shampoo suited to getting rid of dandruff, not just masking it for a day, tends to share a few things:
- targeted actives like zinc gluconate, without relying on aggressive stripping to compensate
- a gentle base of mild glucoside surfactants, rather than heavily-stripping sulfate surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate
- no silicones or parabens, and no added salt (Sodium Chloride) used to thicken the formula
- provitamin B5 to support the barrier while zinc gluconate targets the flaking directly
- no problematic fragrance ingredients that may cause allergies, adding further irritation on an already reactive scalp
For the full ingredient checklist and what to look for on a label, our anti-dandruff shampoo guide goes through it in more detail. Here, the more useful question is what happens after you've chosen a suitable shampoo, since that's where most people give up too early.
Why R&DETAIL® is formulated differently
The R&DETAIL® Skin Caring Shampoo is sulphate-free, silicone-free, and paraben-free, built around a mild cleansing base using mild glucoside surfactants instead of harsher sulfate systems. The preservative system stays deliberately minimal, due to a hot filling process, a vacuum dispenser and a skin-friendly low pH. The formula is free from parabens and MIT (methylisothiazolinone) without needing a harsher alternative in their place.
The formula includes zinc gluconate and provitamin B5, and is based on a medical study from the Universitäts-Hautklinik Giessen. All ingredients used in R&DETAIL® products are carefully selected together with a medical doctor, with a strong focus on skin-friendliness and scalp compatibility.
Getting rid of dandruff, realistically
- Week 1: switch to a shampoo built for the scalp, not against it. Expect the scalp to start calming. The flaking itself often hasn't visibly changed yet, and that's normal.
- Week 2: this is typically when flaking starts reducing, if the shampoo and routine actually suit the scalp.
- Week 3 and beyond: consistency matters more than intensity. A suitable shampoo used every wash outperforms an aggressive one used occasionally, and judged too early.
If flaking persists past three to four weeks of a genuinely suitable routine, or the scalp stays tight or itchy between washes, a complementary treatment that supports the barrier directly is usually the missing piece, not a stronger shampoo.
The R&DETAIL® routine
For scalps prone to flaking, we recommend starting with the R&DETAIL® Skin Caring Shampoo. It targets flaking with zinc gluconate, without the aggressive stripping that tends to make dandruff worse over time.
For flaking that persists, or a scalp that stays tight or itchy between washes, add the R&DETAIL® Hair & Scalp Treatment. It supports the gentle cleanse, cares for the scalp barrier, and leaves hair softer and easier to manage.
- Cleanse with purpose: massage the Skin Caring Shampoo in and leave it on briefly before rinsing thoroughly
- Add care where needed: apply the Hair & Scalp Treatment to scalp, lengths, and ends as needed
- Give it real time: judge the routine after three to four weeks, not after the first wash
The takeaway
Getting rid of dandruff for good was never really about the strongest shampoo. It's about a routine the scalp can respond to over weeks, not days, one that calms the barrier instead of stripping it further.
That's exactly the thinking behind R&DETAIL®: the scalp is skin. That's why the formula is built around gentle cleansing, a minimal formulation, and scientifically selected ingredients, for a calmer scalp with visibly less flaking, and less likely to come straight back.
